One Night on Fork Lake - 2010by - Stephen Molson(Page 1/3) Page 2/3 (Page 3/3)A third fish hit. It was smaller than the first two (2 year class) and was released at boatside. I cooked up half of the smaller splake for a shore brunch - Fish’n Chips (white potato and yam) with a yummy bolete found growing in amongst the grass. Lots of pumpkinseed, perch, and minnows in the lake. A few of the larger (5”) pumpkinseed actually were still guarding their nests. Spotted this little cute vocal and bouncy sandpiper (Spotted?) pecking the grounds looking for food. Did not like the intrusion into his/her territory .. tweeting away .. maybe a nest nearby? This Northern Flicker had a nest inside the tree, with hungry younglings inside. Feeding the brood. I could hear them ‘chirping’ as the parents landed on the trunk. The island held many a wild edible, including this not so wild strawberry, with its 'toonie-sized' fruit. And there were lots of blueberries, which were a few weeks away from being ripe. A gooseberry plant! Raspberries and Serviceberries are also on the island .. all food for birds and mammals alike. What looked and likely is blackberry flowers, found growing along the island’s shoreline. Bog laurel, another very common plant through the park. (Page 1/3) Page 2/3 (Page 3/3) |
