13. Food Pack Precautions You're sharing the woods with wild creatures. You don't want them to take your food. A 50' length of rope should be slung over a sound overhanging branch, at least 100' from your tent. Attach your food pack and garbage bag, and haul them up out of temptation's way. They should be secured a minimum of 10' above the ground and a minimum of 6' from the tree. Squirrels, racoons and bears make unwelcome and dangerous guests. Always keep your entire campsite clean of food and garbage
