Website Permit Application

The Town of Aurora website's Tree Removal Permit page states "A permit to be obtained prior to removal of a single heritage tree or a single tree in any heritage district as described by the by-law."

The above website page includes two links to downloadable items.

The first link is Tree Bylaw Landscape Map. It downloads a map which is not referenced in the by-law, is not dated, has no title, and bears no reference to the bylaw. The wording of the link, combined with the content of this map, appears to me to be intended to create the incorrect impression that an un-named Cultural Heritage Landscape exists and that it is comprised of all the separate properties listed in the Register of Properties of Cultural Heritage Value or Interest. (The PDF's metadata indicates the file was created on February 23, 2016.)

However, as of February 15th of 2021, there have been no Cultural Heritage Landscapes established in Aurora. The Aurora Register of Properties of Cultural Heritage Value or Interest (January 2020) is available online and clearly contains no CHL's. (The PDF's metadata indicates the file was created on February 10, 2020.)

The second link is Tree Removal Permit Application which contains checkboxes, from which to select the reason for the application. The only heritage-related reasons are for being a tree(s) in in the designated heritage district or for being a designated heritage tree(s). (The PDF's metadata indicates the file was created on February 13, 2020.)

This alternate perspective of tree protection appears to have been adopted by the town as a well-intended means of achieving extra protection over some elements of our urban forest. I believe that this is resulting in some unfortunate discriminations and outcomes.
