Day 1 This was our first trip into Algonquin Provincial Park and with all the planning we were both ready to get underway. We had hoping to leave the Oshawa by 9am but after a few unforeseen problems it was well after 10 before we fueled up and hit the road. Just before the park, we pulled off into Oxtongue Provincial Park and headed up the Ragged Falls trail to see our first taste of Algonquin Park. Ragged Falls was a great side trip and it just heightened our need to get to the park and to our site. The drive through Algonquin Park along highway 60 was nothing but pure beauty. We arrived at the gate to Mew Lake and our first “sign” of what we may get to see. We found our site and for a drivein campsite we could not have been happier. This site was right on the small lake and although you could hear the highway you could not see it. We set up camp and had a great first dinner in the Park. We then spent our first night relaxing around the fire. Day 2 We also had other visitors, a chipmunk who we named Jackiey and a red squirrel who we named Joey! Jackiey was very happy to see us. Joey was just happily running through our site with not even a second look. I still don’t think Joey ever stopped moving even when the birds came in close. We started the Old Railway Bike Trail in a light misty rain with a low fog over the old air field but as it started to rain heavier we went back to camp to get our rain gear and check that the tarps were set up right. We had to reconfigure a few things at camp to ensure the tent and gear stayed dry as it appeared our site was slightly sloped, the wrong way. In the end it rained pretty good all day until about 6pm which had us staying at camp watching drips off the tarps and eating stew while just chilling. Day 3 The rain had stop the night before but you could still feel the moisture in the air so a fire was a welcome start to the day. Shortly after waking up, we found the mist covering the lake. We started off the day with a small breakfast. We headed back to the Old Railway bike trail that would take us all the way to Rock Lake. In total the bike path was just over 20km's there and back and boy oh boy, did our bums ever feel ever pebble on the way back! LOL When we reached Pog Lake, there was a dam that was so cool. We checked it out briefly as we were still near the start of the trail and wanted to check out the campsites in Pog Lake. On the way back though, we did take off our shoes and spend some time in the water and just enjoyed what Mother Nature presented to us. Along the bike path near Whitefish Lake we went exploring and accidentally walked into a canoe-in site. Luckily, there was no one there. The site was cool but just off to the side it was a mess. People must have been using it while they were on the bike trail and no one was picking up after themselves. We had to be back at our beach for 4pm as the canoe we reserved was being dropped off then. After the canoe was delivered we canoed around Mew Lake for a bit to check things out, then headed back to camp for dinner. While we were eating, we had some frogs hop right up into the site and even a beaver swam on by, just out from our camp site. It was a fantastic day that ended with another night sitting around the fire. Days 1 to 3 .. Days 4 to 6 .. Days 7 to 8 |
