Lighten Up!

Subtitled "A Complete Handbook for Light and Ultralight Backpacking", this book is a light-weight 112 page paperback. But don't be misled. Its humorous writing and thoroughly amusing cartoon illustrations get straight to the heart of reducing one's pack-weight. Don Ladigin (the author) has been hiking for over twenty-five years and has taught the University of Oregon's Ultralight Backpacking class since its start in 2000.

It contains practical advice and proven techniques. In addition, it has more than 150 amusing and helpful illustrations by Mike Clelland. This little book presents what backpackers need to be safe, comfortable and well-fed while carrying a lightweight pack.

If you camp with a friend who still packs like he/she's leading an entire troop of scouts, get them a copy of this book. If reading this book doesn't turn them into a weight-efficient camper, nothing will!

Walking Softly in the Wilderness

Through its time-spanning editions, this guide has become established as the bible of camp and trail. This latest edition updates readers with recent backpacking gear and practices.

While it is aimed at hikers across the full range of geographic locations, its meticulous details and wide scope make it a "must-read" for any serious Algonquin camper .. regardless of whether they hike or canoe.

"I hope .. that you will take very seriously what this book has to say about 'walking softly' in the wild places: about the skills of using but not injuring the vulnerable land. These are not merely points of backcountry manners or 'wilderness etiquette'. Not optional finishing touches. Low-impact methods are twenty-first-century necessities. While there are legitimate disagreements about some of the details, the outlines are clear enough. There is little doubt about the things each hiker needs to know and do. I hope you will help."

The Trailside Cookbook

For those of us who aren't intent on sunrise-to-sunset, long-haul canoe trips .. a more leisurely pace can provide us with an opportunity to indulge in our camp cuisine. This book is intended for those campers and hikers who are approaching that point of indulgement.

Some of this book's over eighty recipes may involve too much preparation for some campers' tastes. However, its descriptions of cooking methods, equipment and packing provide an informative context in which to appreciate the techniques incorporated into the recipes. Perhaps we tend to punish our appetites in our efforts to reduce the weight of our packs. This book helps one realize that some very tasty meals can be cooked while camping in the wilds.

Well illustrated, clearly written and logically organized .. this book's 144 pages are an enjoyable read, a refreshing treatment of camping cuisine and a real wetting of the appetite.

Wildland Recreation - Ecology and Management

This book takes Algonquin's recreational visitor to the other side of the preservation and protection process. It illustrates the complex and formidable challenges confronting park resource managers, from today's inceased demands on the natural environment to the political environment's decreased program funding.

This book examines impacts to resource components, their patterns, trends and factors, as well as management choices. Under its Visitor Management section, visitors to Algonquin should find the following emphasis on low impact education of special interest ..

"Low impact education is one of the real keys to reducing impact in all recreation areas, from the most primitive to the most developed. It is not a panacea; it will not solve all problems. However, without educated and caring users, impact management will remain primarily reactionary in nature. Managers will seldom be able to get beyond treating symptoms to deal with the cause of problems. Education is the best foundation on which to build a complete management program."
