The Highland Backpacking Trail crosses over the Madawaska River, before heading uphill toward Provoking Lake. These falls are viewed from the trail's bridge as it crosses over the river.

The Highland Backpacking Trail's first loop circles Provoking Lake. This photo looks south from one of the trail's interior campsites, at a point approximately 5 kilometers from the trailhead. Fishermen had brought their canoe over a 960 meter portage from Lake of Two Rivers to Provoking Lake.

After an arduous afternoon's hike on part of the Highland Backpacking Trail, supper was cooked-up at the Tea Lake Dam Picnic Grounds. Afterward, this Blue Heron was observed at the spillway below the dam, waiting for an opportunity to catch a fish.

The following day was a sunny contrast to the preceeding day. After a day of even more hiking, supper was cooked-up on a picnic table on the beach at the east end of Lake of Two Rivers. The reflected sun and radiant sand kept us warm until the sun finally disappeared.
