On April 25, 2022, Ontario Parks announced backcountry camping will start earlier than planned. Backcountry reservations for backcountry canoeing and backpacking can be made starting at 7:00am on April 26, 2022. The first night for backcountry camping is April 26, 2022.

Originally, Ontario Parks had planned to keep backcountry reservation closed from April 1 to May 12, 2022 for the spring melt.

Check out the "official website's notice".

Ontario Parks has closed all backcountry camping (including canoeing, backpacking, and winter camping) from April 1 to May 12, 2022. Developed camping and day use are still possible during this time. Algonquin Park's backcountry reopens to camping on May 13, 2022.

Spring in Algonquin Park comes later than surrounding areas as a result of the Park's higher elevations. When snow and ice have left Toronto or Ottawa, Algonquin Park is often still very wintry. On average, ice on Algonquin's lakes remains until the last week of April or the first week of May. Check out the "official website's notice".

Evan Briden, of YouTube Channel .. "Single Malt and Maps", has posted another two-part video record .. of his group's "Rock Lake to Welcome Lake" .. a late October, two-day canoe trip he took with his three pals. He also provided a brief text-trip-log of the trip in this website's forum .. "Rock Lake to Welcome Lake"

"This was only Scott’s third portage ever, and he handled the increased distance very well. Only a little bit of grumbling, and still less than Rich’s usual complaints. The best part of this portage is the epic view once you reach Welcome Lake. This includes the sweeping view of the lake, and the awesome beach you stroll out on to. We were happy to have arrived at our destination lake, and we were all looking forward to settling in and getting warm at our site."

Evan Briden, of YouTube Channel .. "Single Malt and Maps", has posted a two-part video record of their "Wenda Lake Loop" .. a two day canoe trip he took with his pal Rich.

They started with a hike to the rim of the Barron Canyon, checked out the buildings and history at Achray. Then they headed across Grand, through Carcajou Bay, up Carcajou Creek, via the Spectacle Lakes, Little Carcajou, Wenda and portaged back across to Grand Lake.

"This portage is not very fun and is likely bad coming from both directions. Essentially it is a gradual lung and leg burning hike up the hill to the halfway point, and then a long downhill walk the other half. The forest, creeks, and pond that you pass are nice, but you need to make a point to notice these as you trudge along while laden down with gear. We stopped twice to cool down, hydrate, and joke about how stupid it was to end our camping season with the hardest portage we could find in the area."

Kayak Camper (forum handle: "Uppa") has shared via his YouTube channel "Kayak Camper", the two part trip video of his six-day loop-trip via Farm, Booth, Round Island, Dickson, McKaskill, Shirley and Crotch Lake ... "Round we Go".

" I spent the first night on Booth's Lake, a popular backcountry destination, and then pushed on to a much-less visited Round Island Lake - and the portages to get there definitely reflected that! . . . Same camera as the last couple of years ( a GoPro 8), but I was filming in 4K at 60fps"

Wanda Spruyt has submitted a trip-log of her mother-daughter seven day Trip to Achray, taken this past September 6th to 12th.

"The hiking path to High Falls is at the end of the portage and is indicated by a few ribbons. It's a very narrow path, but easy to see, and certainly very rooty and rocky. Joyce took a step forward, then gave a startled yell and jumped sideways, just missing a good size snake. As it was slithering around, a chipmunk came running up and jumped on the log where the snake was. The snake reached out and up and the chipmunk reached down to the snake. Neither did anything other than just about touch noses."

Evan Briden, of YouTube Channel .. "Single Malt and Maps", has posted the final video component of the six day canoe trip he took with buddies Rich and Ryan. It was a "car-ferrying" six day trip .. Tim Lake to Grass Lake, Highview Ranger Cabin, High Falls, Red Pine Bay, Misty Lake, and out by Magnetewan Lake.

This six-pack video series is the perfect treatment for anyone suffering from Algonquin withdrawal. And Evan has timed the sixth installment's release as a great Christmas gift for his regular fans!

"This trip was something we were very excited to tackle as we were scheduled to travel some remote and beautiful parts of the Algonquin interior. We experienced multiple moose, several interior Ranger Cabins, excellent Brook Trout fishing, and some moral sapping alder."
