Map Submits - Map Discrepancy Submissions

The ABR is asking recreationalists to submit instances of errors, discrepancies or inconsistencies they experience between their own observations and what appears on either the Friends of Algonquin Park Official Canoe Route Map or Jeff McMurtrie's Algonquin Provincial Park Map. Submissions will be forwarded to the participating map-makers. An online record of the submissions and their outcomes (revisions, corrections, updates, etc.) will be compiled below. Completed submission forms can either be emailed to the ABR as filled-out attachment files or as “copy-pasted” email content. Click here to download the submission form in .doc format or here to download it in .html format.

# 3     Date: 13/04/2013 By: AA Forum: 'Barry' from IP address 72.39.129.61 Edition(s): FOAP 12/13, JM V4 Location: Portage landing from Pen to Night

There has been confusion 'on the ground' regarding where the landing to the portage between Pen Lake and Night Lake is located. A group could not continue their trip due to not being able to locate the portage. While the situation may have involved a missing portage sign, the Canoe Route Map's mislocation of the landing appears to have played a part in the confusion.

Reference at Algonquin Adventures Forum.

Here on the 2013 version of Jeff McMurtrie's map, the correct placement of the landing is shown, as south of the small point and bay.

Here on the 2012-2013 edition of the Canoe Route Map, the portage landing is portrayed as north of the same point and bay.
Here is a coloured overlay of where a correction of the CRM should be made.

# 2     Date: 13/10/2010 By: DP, Cleveland OHIO Edition(s): FOAP 09/10, JM V2, BM V2 Location: Misty L., P-130 to Timberwolf L.

Left-upper: The FOAP 2009/2010 map shows the Misty Lake landing of the 130 meter portage to Timberwolf Lake being located well into Misty's SE bay .. well east of the creek that empties out of Timberwolf Lake.

Left-middle: The JM Version 2 map (left-middle) shows the Misty Lake landing of the 130 meter portage to Timberwolf Lake being located well into Misty's SE bay .. well east of the creek that empties out of Timberwolf Lake.

Left-lower: The Backroad Mapbooks map shows the Misty Lake landing of the 130 meter portage to Timberwolf Lake being located very close to the east side of the creek that empties out of Timberwolf Lake.

In-the-field observations: .. indicate that the Misty Lake landing of the 130 meter portage from Timberwolf Lake is actually located in very close proximity to the creek's mouth .. as indicated in the diagram to the right. Observations corroborated by LM of Kitchener, ON (source of 3 photos below).

Comment 1: The Backroad Mapbooks map appears to comply with the in-the-field observations. The FOAP and JM maps appear to require adjustments before they comply with the in-the-field observations.

Comment 2: No information is supplied relating to the location of the landing at the south end of the portage, located on Timberwolf Lake. Ideally, the landing at the south end of the portage should have its location also re-examined. NB: Additional detail-photos are invited.

# 1     Date: 04/10/2010 By: BB, Aurora ON Edition(s): FOAP 09/10, JM V2, BM V2 Location: Shirley L., SE corner

Left: Both the FOAP 2009/2010 map and the JM Version 2 map show there being only two campsites on the east shore of Shirley Lake, south of the portage to Ryan Lake.

Also, they both show a third campsite being located on the very south end of the lake.

Right: While the Backroad Mapbooks map shows three campsites on the east shore of Shirley Lake (south of the portage to Ryan Lake), it also shows a campsite on the very south end of the lake.

In actual fact, there are three campsites on the east shore of Shirley Lake, south of the portage to Ryan Lake .. at the locations shown in the diagram to the left.

Panorama of south beach - large size

Paddled the entire south shoreline and walked its entire beach. There is no campsite located on the south shore. Nor is there any indication that there has ever been one on the south shore. While staying at campsite 1, noticed number of parties arrive on lake from Crotch Lake portage and immediately paddle over to beach. Within minutes they'd leave .. probably after failing to find the 'missing' campsite!
